The high water usage within a distillery and the high BOD and COD loading of the subsequent effluent streams produced often lead to the requirement for anaerobic digestion of these wastes to produce energy prior to processing of these effluents in a more conventional or Membrane bioreactor based effluent treatment plant.
The space saving of using high capacity hollow fibre membrane systems can result in a footprint of less than half that of a conventional biological treatment system.
Feeds to these plants can often contain COD’s of 3000 – 5000 mg/l at flowrates of 50 to 250 m3/hr.
The processed effluents can often be reused following treatment by reverse osmosis. Re use rates of > 45% have been reported.
